RETINOL – A SKIN CARE SUPERSTAR
Retinol captures a lot of attention in the skin care industry for its multiple benefits as well as its well-documented efficacy. So, what is it and what does it do?
Retinol is a form of Vitamin A that when applied to your skin works as a cell-communicating agent to instruct skin cells on how to behave properly and more youthfully. It is an antioxidant and is documented to help improve wrinkles, discoloration, skin texture as well as increase collagen production and aid with conditions like acne and eczema. It is also an amazing companion to any type of lightening treatment, as it will help expedite results.
Vitamin A comes in various forms such as cosmetic-grade retinol, retinyl acetate, retinyl palmitate, and retinaldehyde (to name only a few), as well as prescription-only forms such as retinoic acid/tretinoin, adapelene and tazarotene. When retinol absorbs into the skin it is broken down and converted into retinoic acid, the compound that effects skin cells and their behavior.
While retinoids are known for their exfoliation and cell-turnover capabilites, their amazing (and more significant) benefit is in their ability to effect gene expression, which is what can truly transform the skin, telling it to act like younger, healthier skin. This is what is responsible for a silky smooth, more even and youthful complexion.
While all forms of Vitamin A can cause skin irritation and sensitivity, it is more common with prescription strength retinoids. In order to combat this irritation, it is important to use a well-formulated product that also utilizes the benefits of other skin-calming and anti-inflammatory ingredients. It is also recommended to begin slowly. Start with a mild concentration of retinol every other night, or every two nights, while you build up a tolerance. Eventually it can be used every night and you can increase concentration.
Make sure your retinol comes in an opaque, air-tight container, as retinol will oxidize (breakdown) and be rendered ineffective when overexposed to light and air. (This is also why retinol/retinoids are recommended for night use – so their efficacy isn’t diminished by sunlight after being applied to the skin.) Well-formulated retinol products will help your skin to better tolerate retinol as well.
